Ok, so I'm learning to speak italian, and writing an email to someone in Italy who I haven't really talked to before. what would be a good way to start? This is all I have so far. Is it correct? :-/

You can use what I said or what Caesar said for, "I like Twilight too."

I'm still studying Italian, but I think the way what I and Caesar said would be translated differently is that:

Me -

"Anch'io" = "I also (me too)"

"piace" = "it is pleasing (like)"

"Twilight" = "Twilight"

In English this would sound more like, "I like Twilight too". I just gave you the literal translation.

Caesar -

"Anche" = "also"

"mi" = "to/for me", in this case "to me"

"piace" = "it is pleasing (like)"

"Twilight" = "Twilight"

This also would basically come out to, "I like Twilight too" in English.

I would love to study abroad in Italy for year. I am going to be transferring to a Cal State in Fall 2011 and will be working on my bachelors degree. After that I would love to get my masters.

Does anyone have experience with studying abroad through a Cal State school?

Is it possible?

I am studying Business.

I know Cal State runs many of it's own study abroad programs for their students, so my first bit of advice would be to visit the study abroad office and see what options they have. But even if you don't find what you are looking for, there are many outside programs that you can attend and receive credit for. Academic Programs International and CIEE are two such programs, but there are many more.

I highly recommend visiting a site like http://www.go-study-abroad.com to easily browse through 100's of study abroad programs from around the world. I'm confident you'll find something there that will interest you.

It started in N. Italy only because that is where most of the money was. Artist don't do their work primarily for enjoyment, they do it when they are paid to do it and if you look at a lot of Italian Renaissance art, you will find the paintings filled with various patrons of the arts - they paid the painters to put them beside the infant Jesus, for instance.

The Renaissance was not just an artistic movement, it also included literature and a complete change of mind.

I might be at Rome, and wanted to travel to Barcelona. Is there any cheaper way other than flight? I've tried Euroline, but I have no idea how it works, can't check the timetable, how many hours to reach there and the cost.

Much cheaper to fly with Ryanair. Did a check on the price (Mid April) and you can get one way from Rome (Ciampino) to Barcelona (Girona) for about 73€ inc luggage and CC fees. If you are flexible on dates you can do it cheaper. This is also cheaper than a train. The sooner you book with them the cheaper it is.

Easyjet also fly to Barcelona but from Milan. Cost form 39€ inc luggage and CC fees.

Obviously if you are to travel peak season in July and August it will cost more.

Also added a link to check prices on all airlines all routes in one search. Just enter in your departure city arrvial city and dates or whole month for cheapest deals. It works.

Well...I wonder how many moderately intelligent responses there were that they didn't show in comparison to the number of totally moronic answers...all of which they did show. Some of the questions (particularly about Kyrgyzstan) did not surprise me at all: the average American can't be expected to know what precise threat any particular nation might pose to the U.S. However, identifying Australia as France and North Korea was pretty hilarious, as were the identities of the members of the "axis of evil". For a country beginning with "U" I immediately thought of "Uruguay" instead of the U.S. (naturally - one does not normally think of one's own country when asked to think of a country...)

I'm guessing that Australiens would fare about as well, having the disadvantage of being aliens.....

It depends on where and what you eat. If your hotel includes breakfast, you should take advantage of that to help you cut meal costs. If not, most people here have a brioche and a capuccino or espresso for breakfast and you can do that for a couple of euro.

You'll be able to find a lot of places where you could get a panino, bruschetta, or pizza by the slice for 3 to 6 euro plus a euro or two for a drink. A pizza will typically be 8 to 13 euro. For comparison, a McMenu value meal at McDonald's goes for around 7 euro give or take. Generally, the food will be cheaper and better if you're not in the immediate area of the major tourist attractions. Restaurants post menus, so you can check what's offered and prices while you're out exploring. I usually end up spending 25 to 50 euro for dinner when I'm out exploring, but you could eat well for less (or much more in some places).

In Germany they have the Bavarian Purity Act, in Italy they have laws to stipulate everything from the length of pasta to the milk that goes into various cheeses... should legislation be introduced to govern the bagel industry? I remember when I was younger getting bagels that were wonderfully chewy on the outside. Now all the bagels seem to have a horrible, breadlike consistency. I'm sure there are good bagels left, but they are hard to find.

yup, those are bread bagels and they suck. They shouldnt even be called bagels. I have no one to talk to about this. My girlfriend and I have a daughter who is 3. She was a great mother. Recently our relationship has been getting worse - she was violently raped over 10 months ago. It was in our home and our daughter was there though she did not witness it. She went to counseling, we both went together. We moved into an apartment and sold our old house. She stopped being so close with our daughter and with me. She became such a cold person, I couldn't recognize her anymore. The counselor said it was "normal". I'm doing everything I can,i'm trying so hard to make things better for her. I sometimes leave her alone with our daughter so she can have alone time with her but nothing has changed. I ask her if she wants to come to the park or tuck her in bed and she refuses. Oftentimes she holds our daughter and cries, she still cries though it's been so long in counseling. The counselor says it takes a long tiem.

My niece (who is 8) lost her mother and I have to look after her because I'm the only person she has left. My niece lives in Italy so I plan to go there for a couple of months or more to sort everything out. My girlfriend asked if I would do something for her but not question her about it, and I said yes. She told me to take our daughter with me and I said no. I told her she's not thinking straight, I told her she was crazy - I didn't mean it, it just came out. I'm leaving for Italy next week and she is serious about what she said. She's packing our daughter's clothes and we had an argument about it today. I lost it and screamed at her, i told her she was cold-hearted. I just want to shake some sense into her, I don't know why she doesn't want our daughter anymore , she won't tell me why. Please help. Can you help me. I've spoken to the counselor but all they say is the same damn thing.

For starters, that child can't go to Italy without a passport and if you have no dna paternity test that states you are the daddy, you won't be able to take her with you. Unless you get a court order permitting you to take her out of the country, this just won't happen. I suggest you consult a lawyer.

Now there is another issue here. You have your priorities wrong. You seem to think that an eight year old niece takes precedence over your own biological daughter. She doesn't. Your own daughter should come first. And frankly speaking, your daughter's life and health should come first. And if it doesn't, then you are not fit to take care of your niece or any other child!

As for your gf not wanting her daughter, she has experienced a violent rape and something cracked in her. Although she is getting counselling, it obviously isn't enough. She may need a psychiatrist or even be placed in an in-patient facility for treatment (and yes, it can take a long time to get past this). And until your gf is completely healed, she should not be left alone with the child she has rejected, much less be left in a position of responsibility over her.

Do you remember Andrea Yates? Well her husband made her take care of their children and she drowned all five of them. Texas charged her with murder but it got over turned. She is spending the rest of her life in a psychiatric facility (as she should be as she was nuts) but as far as I am concerned, that husband should have been charged too. There are five dead babies and if he had taken them out of his wife's care, they would be alive today!

I want you to understand something. If your girlfriend is not able to take care of your child, then you are legally responsible to care for her. And if you refuse to do so and insist on leaving the child in the care of her unfit mother when you know better, if anything happens to your daughter, the very least you could be charged with is NEGLECT! You will be held legally responsible if your gf hurts the child.

As for what you want, it doesn't matter. I want pigs to fly but that isn't going to happen either. You can want your gf to bond again with her child from here to kingdom come but you can't force it. And if you continue to do so unrealistically, you may be setting your daughter up for a tragedy.

Stop denying the reality of the situation. Accept the responsibility for your daughter. She is dependent on you and you cannot abandon your responsibility to her just so you take take on responsibility for someone else's child. Your child should come first.

Get a lawyer and go to court. Ask for sole custody based upon your gf's current unfitness (subpoena her counsellor's if necessary). Ask for supervised only visitation with the child's mother. And then don't leave the child alone with her mother. If you do, you could go to jail for neglect (or worse).

As for your niece, she is going to have to go into foster care temporarily until you get things set up so you can take your daughter with you to Italy. Remember, this is your daughter...your only daughter. She should come first before all your other relatives (except for a wife).

I'm getting sick of it! the thing that really bothers me is having people come up to you and say they won out of luck, first of all soccer is all about luck NOT of how many great soccer players there are on a team, or because of that cheap *** Zidane gave a headbutt to Materazzi, and caused him to get a red flag, and had him get kicked out of the game. France and Italy both had 1 to 1 in the beginning, France got a penalty kick and shot a goal, and Italy shot a goal, that dosen't make France better than Italy or any other team because of one player. So the game... it was even, except for the end when they got all the penalty shots, and caused them to win. And another thing, you cannot cheat in soccer, ok, enough with the insults. I'm getting tired of having to hear the same **** repeatedly, if it bothers you that they won then keep your mouth shut, and stop freaking booing, people almost got their assed kicked by some fans on my block yesterday, thank god there wasn't a riot.

Actually, broadening/improving one's language skills is a very broad concept, it should be done in more than one ways at the same time which is highly recommended. One can NOT become better ONLY in one area e.g. grammar, one MUST improve skills in ALL dimensions of the language!

Learning language well requires being as active as possible and making the learning as FUN for oneself as possible. Taking lessons is always important, but equally important are these:

1) Listen/watch: Keep listening to internet radio stations like BBC, watch TV shows in English (use only subtitles, NOT voice dubbing in case you are not a native English speaker!), etc.

2) Write/communicate: Try to find discussion forums from the web about things that you find interesting (music/various artists, hobbies, etc.) and start communicating there with other people using only English. Start using instant messaging systems in case you find some new friends or start emailing them.

3) Buy yourself a proper dictionary, and each time when you see a strange word that you do not understand, look it up. Putting words into their CONTEXT is one of the best ways to broaden one's vocabulary and grammar knowledge, the more you read and write the better. Memorising is NOT the best way to go with learning grammar or any other language areas!

The main point in ANY language learning is to make it as fun as possible for yourself. Try to find topics that INTEREST you, read online newspapers (Times, Guardian, Independent...), listen to BBC/NBC and other radio stations online, if you find a discussion forum for e.g. your favourite hobby or your idols in music do participate there, etc. The key word here is CONTEXT, which means that it is easier to learn new words and their usage as well as grammar when you use/see them in their real CONTEXT. The more you see and hear the new words in their context and the more you use them in your speech & writing, the easier it becomes to remember their meanings.

I'm sorry there is no easy way out with this, one really must develop language skills in ALL these language "levels" or dimensions in order to reach better language skills!!

Last but not least: NEVER EVER use ANY online translators, they are nothing but utter rubbish!! English is practically EVERYWHERE in the online world these days, you just have to use your imagination to find it! Learning pace is always personal, it takes the time it takes so there is no reason to hurry it up too much. If you do, you will not learn so well. Also, please learn the basics of the standard English first before advancing to finer details like dialects/accents.

Hi ! I'm from Italy, Milano . I live there for work but isn't very very beautiful. There's only Duomo and work. The people in Milan or in Lodi or in Pavia (places near milano) is usually impolite (scortese).

I prefer Napoli beautiful!!!!!!!!!! , here the people is kind, funny, you can see people play mandolino, sing... Beautiful. Food is really good!! example. (Frolle, Pane, Spaghetti, PIZZA) You should visit this city..... here is the Fashion, really not in Milan!

Hello, i'm moving to London from Italy and i need your help!! I have my small Internet business and thinking of moving to the UK, in London or somewhere not so far from London. I need some better taxation, an English-speaking environment, a better contact with English programmers and so on. My questions are:

1. What are the best places to live around London considering I'm not a billionaire , I am moving with my girlfriend, and I wouldn't need to travel to London every day since most of time I would like to work in the place where i'm supposed to live?

2. I was thinking about Harlow, it's close to Stansted and about 1 hour away by train or coaches from london, how is this new city?

3. What is the cost of decent living in the UK if someone doesn't have to struggle every day but he is not a tycoon either, like, how much would it be totally for a month (incl. housing (rentals), electricity, other bills, food - all, probably, slightly above the average)

Actually Harlow is only 30 minutes by train from London Liverpool Street Station, but it is a dreadful place, If you want to be near Stanstead look at Sawbridgeworth or Bishops Stortford. Other nice towns with frequent fast trains to London are Leatherhead, Dorking and Guildford in Surrey, Sevenoaks Kent mebtioned above. Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Yes, it's very nice. It's a somewhat large town on the Amalfi coast. The food is good as it is in all of Italy, and the people are nice because it is a tourist area.

If you're going to that area, I actually prefer Positano, which is smaller, quainter, and more picturesque.

When I was 3-5 we lived in Missouri and had a big house with a basement where we'd play, even riding our Big Wheels, especially in the winter. The floor was concrete and there were wooden beam-like pillars that we'd swerve around and around.

Now I live in Italy and I have a "cantina", which is a small cellar, but no real basement :-)

If you are only here for 4 days, then I would recommend that you do not try to see all these on the same trip. You will end up spending a lot of time in transit rather than sightseeing especially if you need to get back to Rome for a return flight. There's enough to see in Rome that you could spend the whole time there. However, I do understand wanting to see the other cities.

Rome to Florence is only 90 to 100 minutes on the faster trains. You can easily do this part of the trip. The train arrives within a short walk of the historic area of Florence. Florence to Venice is another 2 and a half hours on the high speed trains. Pisa is one hour to 2 hr 15 minutes each way from Florence.

You can use this site for planning train travel here in Italy:http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/i… The trains are relatively cheap and fast over the distances between Rome and Venice here. While flying time would be faster, the overall trip isn't because you have time to get to/from airports, check-in, security, baggage pickup, and you have to be there well before the flight time.

Im recently talking to this guy and we have been in the process of getting to know one another.He recently went on vacation to italy for a month and said he hoped i have a great summer and he mananged to keep in contact with me while he was there.He has asked me lots of questions such as whats my major? my hobbies? how many classes im taking this summer? etc. We met a few times at church and he wanted to hang out during this summer but i been busy with summer school and work that it was not possible. He recently moved to texas for med school. I asked how his new home is? he said its a little empty it could use a women's touch. So i said well dont worry you will make friends soon. So he said that wasnt the anwser he was hoping for.I also suggested making friends in church since he hardly knows anyone there. He replied by saying im sure things will work out but if they dont can we still chat..what did he mean? Oh and the other day he texted me saying hey how are you? so i was like good you? So he said he was a little bored at a club he was watching tv with a friend/cousin. So i said sounds like your making friends? I asked him no dancing? Hes like well i usually dance with a female friend since your not here...so i said well dont let me stop you from enjoying yourself. He also asked what i consider a nice birthday gift? I asked why do you ask hes like just curious. He also asked me how well do we know each other? He aked me how my last few days of summer has been? He also asked how well i think we know each other? Hi there, I'm Italian and this is one of the many things that make me ashamed of this country. People here do discriminate each other but not because of the skin tone or physical appearance (fortunately both of them are very varied in Italy so it would be impossible to do so), just because the north is more industralized and rich. People from north and south do not understand each other, mentalities are different... but that's not supposed to be bad, I think something varied can only be good. Strong racism originates from these differences though... it's ridiculous.

I don't know about Italians in America and as for the other countries each one has got a different situation, in some of them there's discrimination against ethnic minorities, but I think that happens just anywhere unfortunately.

Some of the names of people I know seem to have nothing to do with each other, like Theresa Patricia Ricarda. Long names are common in Europe. I saw a Lifetime Movie on TV awhile back, and it's been bothering me to see it again because I never got to finish it :/

Basically this woman gets a divorce and moves to like Italy/Rome and gets 'Lucky' and ends up buying this old womans house for cheap. Hi, this question may be a bit complicated but heregoes:

I really wanted to visit London this summer but my parents really want to go to Germany. But my dad thought it was appropriate to travel by train from germany to places like italy and london. I don't think this would work out because it would cost too much money.

Is there any place in Germany where i can travel to bordering countries (not necessarily the countries above) without having to pay like 200 euros each train trip? What would you recommend to a family that wants to visit a good amount of european countries in about 2 weeks (ignoring hotels and such).

Your father's idea is indeed a crackpot one. It is like basing yourself in SanFran bc you want to visit Canada, Las Vegas and Mexico including Cancun all in 2 weeks.

As a general rule you need at least 2 weeks per country if you want to visit Europe. For larger countries like France, Spain, Italy and Germany it is better to plan on spending 3 weeks. Big capitals like Rome, Paris, Berlin need about 5 days to see properly.

You might be able to cover 2 countries partially in 2 weeks, but not much more. Your parents might want to take a look at this table: http://www.ricksteves.com/rail08/itinpla…

For a family it is usually best to rent a campervan or a car and travel around this way. Arrange car rental through a travel agent when you book your flight tickets, it is cheaper. Train is too expensive for a family unless you use special offers.

I went to Rome for my honeymoon in 2008. The plane ticket was the killer. Go to as many websites as you can to compare prices. The hotel was $1100 for 10 nights. It wasn't fancy, but it worked and it was in the center of the city. Meals were a little pricey depending on where you ate. My breakfast was provided by the hotel. Lunch was whatever looked good in the grocery store and dinner was around 15 euros a person. All in all, probably about 25 euros per person per day. Check out prices for the places you are interested in to estimate costs. My ten day trip with everything included was probably around $5000, but I'm sure you could go for less. I didn't skimp on food. :)

You can buy the modem, but that doesn't mean that you'll have internet everywhere. You will also need an internet provider, OR an area where there is free internet, like a Cafe. But if you want to go to a Cafe, use wireless instead.

I've been living abroad for the past 20 year's,so i actually don't know how everything is going on over there especially on the N.H.S, dental care, asking for a G.P, and if there's unemployment benefit for a British Citizen who maybe not capable to find a decent steady job in a few year's time. I have a feeling a different approach is in order here. Let me suggest some ways you might find more insight to your topic. Look for artists from that time period and see what they were painting. This would be the 1500's, or the Italian High Renaissance, so think about paintings of that period, and then do a search of artists who were painting them, such as Michelangelo. Also, think about books that would have been published in that time - what books were written about Italy in that time period?

No need to be worried! Although your feelings are understandeable, moving to a new country and all. I am Italian, of Southern Italian origin, living in Northern Italy. It depends on the shop, but you generally don't return shoes, so try before you buy. But for other things, you generally can.

As for the fashion, just wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. A lot of the styles in Italy are similar anyway.

You'll find Italians (especially Southern ones) are very hospitable friendly, warm people who love when foreign people try to speak their language and learn about their culture.

There is some racism in Italy, as everywhere else. Americans shouldn't even talk about being racist, especially considering the DISGUSTING way Sicilian immigrants were treated when they immigrated to America in mass numbers.

Diego Armando Maradona and Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) are known to be the greatest soccer players of all time but there has always been a heated debate on who was the better player. I will touch on the different aspects of both players and let you decide for yourself.

Throughout his professional career, Pele won many trophies and medals, which included three World Cups, two South American club championships, two world club championships, and ten Brazil club titles. Pele scored 560 goals in 578 games playing for Brazil, Santos, New York Cosmos. If you want to include his statistics for exhibitions and other non-professional matches it is claimed that Pele has scored as many as 1281 goals in 1363 games. During Maradona’s professional career he won only one World Cup, one Argentina club title, and two Italy club titles. During this time he scored 345 goals in 681 games playing for Argentina, Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Newell’s Old Boys, Barcelona, Napoli, and Sevilla.

Though Pele scored more goals than Maradona, many of them were against considerably weaker opponents where as Maradona scored most of his goals in European leagues against stronger opponents. Despite that, Pele still managed to be accomplish an amazing feat by scoring 77 goals in 92 games with Brazil (12 in World Cups) compared to Maradona’s 34 goals in 91 games with Argentina (8 in World Cups).

When Pele played for Brazil in the 1970 World Cup it was considered he was on the greatest football team of all time playing with the likes of Jairzinho, Tostao, and Carlos Alberto. Brazil could have probably won this World Cup without Pele. Maradona played for mediocre teams such as Napoli and Argentina where he was the only great player on the team and still managed to win 2 club titles and a World Cup with them. I would consider Maradona a MVP because of the individual impact he had on the teams he played for. If Pele played for Argentina in 1986, would they have won the World Cup?

I also feel that if Maradona had not become a drug abuser he would have become a much better player, which Maradona personally admitted. His cocaine addiction became a problem in the early 1990’s, lowering his playing ability and eventually kept him out for most of the 1994 World Cup. If Maradona didn’t involved with drugs he might have been unanimously considered as the greatest soccer player of all time.

One important thing to take note of is that when Pele burst onto the soccer scene in 1956 he showed the skill, technique, power, and accuracy that had never seen before. Pele quickly became a legend in the sport. Everyone wanted to see him play and soccer became increasingly popular as a result in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Maybe if there was no Pele there wouldn’t have been Maradona or any of the other fantastic players we have today.

Okai boys. So i am Canadian but i live in Kenya! & i've got an amazing boyfriend who is dutch and also lives in Kenya. But for our summer breaks we have each gone home. So we haven' seen each other in like 7 weeks and we still have 7 days without seeing each other but only 5-6 days without talking of the phone! But the thing is that during week 5 and a half of being away from each other i got an email from him. It said that he loves me. He wants me. He's still in love with me. He doesn't want to break up and he won't. That i am the most amazing girlfriend ever. But then it also says that he has changed. He is not sure if his love for me is like how it was before we left. several banks offer account to foreign people. You generally need: to be of age, an identity card, your temporary residence address.

The best way to open a bank account is to visit a bank branch office near your home and ask to them. If you don't speak Italian, go with an italian speaker friend. Bank employees don't generally speak foreign languages.

In my opinion, a big bank is better because you can use their larger agency-net over the whole country. Furthermore, they offer on-line accounts which are very useful.

There are many places you can rent a plane, but you didn't specify where you will be. If you are in Rome, look for the 'Urbe' airport. Most cities have one private airport that you can rent from.

That said, it is not as common in Italy as it is in the states, so you won't have the choice of FBOs that you may be used to. For example, in a huge city like Rome, there are very few airplanes for rent, and it is EXTREMELY expensive because fuel is very costly, and they have many fees that we are not accustomed to.

Additionally, for all airplanes that take off in Italy, and are not classified as an Ultralight, you must file a flight plan.

Finally to the requirements: If you are flying a European registered aircraft, you will need to get a special waiver in order to fly the airplane without an instructor on board. Trust me when I tell you it is not worth it. Oddly enough, if you had a US Registered aircraft in Italy, you would be fully legal without the waiver.

Even if your Italian passport is expired, you can always use it to return to Italy. You could eventually renew your passport at the nearest Italian consulate, and pay the passport tax there in GBP.

If you are a missionary priest or have moved to the UK to work for a local company, you are exempted from the passport tax, according to Art. 18 of the Italian Passport Law (check the link below).
