How could I make a necklace out of some shards of porcelain?

To understand why, here's the backstory: My mother has this really beautiful Italian porcelain tea set that she says has been in our family for decades. I'm a bit fuzzy on the story, but apparently my great-grandfather was killed in Italy during WWII, and the tea set was the last thing he sent my great-grandmother. She gave it to my grandmother, and now my mother inherited it a few years ago, and it's been on display on a shelf in our house ever since. In a very unfortunate accident involving my four-year-old daughter, a part of the set (the creamer) was broken. My mother said she wasn't upset, but I don't completely believe her. In the hopes of trying to make it up to her, I grabbed the pieces when she wasn't looking and I brought them home with me to figure out a way to make a necklace out of them.

Ideally, I'd like to make a pendant out of one of the larger shards (the two largest are both about 1.5 inches), but how would I file down the edges so that it wouldn't cut her? How would I get a hole through the top? Basically, how in the world do I turn sharp chunks of porcelain into a necklace?

I'm open to other ideas if you have one better than a pendant.

Thank you for your time!

You could stick them to a plain picture frame then put a picture of your great-grandparents in there.

Is there something to see in Palermo, Italy?

I plan to visit Italy this year and I am looking to visit some of its cities. My main question is what to do in Palermo - I mean any awesome things I should definitely see or any fun things I can do for 2-3 days.

The coolest thing my husband and I did in Palermo was to see the Capuchin Catacombs (sorry if misspelled). It's a bit dark and morbid, but COMPLETELY fascinating.... look up Rosalia Lombardo. Also, the opera house from Godfather III is in Palermo. About an hour outside of Palermo, in Trapani, there is a mountain called Mt. Erice. You take a lift up to the top and there's this town with lost of bakeries and shops.... it's a huge tourist attraction. My husband and I even saw a celebrity there (an Italian celebrity, so I didnt know him but my husband did). His mom wanted us to go, and we were dreading it at first, but we were so glad we went... it ended up being a really nice day out
